The revolt has started. First it was IIT Kanpur announcing its own entrance examination for admission in 2013. On 21st June, IIT Delhi also joined and declared that they will conduct a separate entrance examination in 2013. One of the most important point to note is that both, IITD and IITK, announced that they will try to coordinate with other IITs to conduct the entrance examination in 2013. This leads to a fair possibility that IIT Kanpur and Delhi may soon announce collaboration for conducting the entrance examination.

Now the big question is “Who is next?”. As per different media reports, IIT Bombay is also considering the option to conduct its own entrance examination instead of the proposed common admission test announced by HRD on 28th May. Also, IIT Kharagpur is under pressure from faculty and alumni to reject the proposal of HRD ministry. It will be a very interesting situation in case IIT Bombay and Kharagpur also decides to reject changed format of the IIT entrance examination for 2013. These four IITs may collaborate to conduct a single examination for admission to IIT Kanpur, Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur. We also can not rule out possibility of other remaining IITs joining them in later stage.

Thus, there is a chance that admission to IITs will be through a single entrance examination conducted by IITs and for IITs only. If this happens, the newly proposed common entrance test, JEE Main and Advanced, will be just a replacement of AIEEE. Till now, most of the states have not agreed to join the common admission test, and will be conducting their own state entrance examinations in 2013. Some states have agreed to join in 2014, but that is too far. If the revolt from IITs is successful, HRD may have to scrap their plan to conduct “one nation one test” examination. Students are confused over the changing formats and new announcements every day. Srinivas Raghav, one of the worried students, said “Please confirm regarding iseet decision even we have to prepare for whether normal iit jee or iseet? Please make the decision faster. Everyone is confused and make it clear whether it is implemented from 2013″.
