There has been enough news articles and statements that a common entrance examination is approved to be held from 2013. As per a press release by HRD Ministry, “A Joint Entrance Examination for admission to the undergraduate programmes in engineering would be conducted in two parts, JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED. The proposed changes will be effective from the year 2013.”.

However, the voices of descent are growing louder and bigger. The alumni members of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are exploring options to move to court to prevent the introduction of this new entrance examination system for IITs to be implemented from 2013. As per a report by The Times of India, All India IIT Faculty Federation secretary A K Mittal said, “We feel cheated. Despite promising us that no steps will be taken if there is any dissent, the HRD minister has gone ahead.” Mittal said they had written to the PM highlighting the practical problems of introducing a new format in 2013.

The strongest reaction came from IIT Kanpur faculty federation. “For students aspiring to appear in JEE-2013, the IIT Council proposal is a breach of trust — both in the processes and content of the new examination which will not be clear to them any time soon because work on details has not even been initiated. In no case should any new system be introduced before 2014,” the federation said in a statement. A number of faculty members also indicated that they may not take part in paper setting activities for this new format. “The proposed single examination for engineering admission is counterproductive, unilateral, and arbitrary. The format announced is a piecemeal patch-work with serious academic and organizational lacunae in each of the components of the test. It has the potential of becoming a national disaster if not opposed by all stakeholders at this stage,” the federation said.

There is a strong chance that the issue will go to the court which means more delay in a final decision. This is leading to a state of utter confusion among the student community. One of the concern student said to IseetIndia team, “The old format should be continued for another year atleast because students in 12th at present will be in a huge dilemma, and confused on which type of preparation to follow. I request the decision panel to think once more and come to a concrete statement.”
